Supernova (Early Warning) Experiment

Picasa This experiment is about detecting Supernova bursts before it is visible to telescopes. Neutrinos radiated out of the super massive explosion of a star could be detected by these detectors. It would allow advance warning to allow observations to be prepared before any visible event occurs. See full resolution of this picture for more details on this experiment. IMG 0833 32 columns of detectors. IMG 0836 Each column contains 4 of these rods. Each rod is filled with Helium-3 which (at least at the time) was very expensive. Each of these rods cost thousands of dollars. IMG 0834 Each of the 886 blocks of lead weighs 88kg.
